Federal Research Sets the Compliance Bar
Fort Detrick is the largest employer in the city and county, with 10,827 military, federal and contractor staff across nearly 1,300 acres. Its tenants include the US Army Medical Research and Development Command, the National Cancer Institute at Frederick, a Network Enterprise Center and the 21st Signal Brigade, drawing on five cabinet departments. That single fact shapes local IT demand more than anything else: a large share of Frederick businesses hold federal contracts or subcontracts, which is why CMMC readiness appears on so many local providers' front pages.
A Biotech Cluster Alongside It
The life sciences base is real and it is manufacturing as well as research. ThermoFisher employs 815 people here, AstraZeneca 750, Lonza 517 and Kite, a Gilead company, 510, with Leidos Biomedical running the Frederick National Laboratory at 2,440. The city counted more than 80 bioscience companies in 2021, its most recent published figure. Regulated manufacturing and research data bring validation and audit requirements that general business IT does not.
A Two-Way Commuter Market, Not a Bedroom Town
Frederick is often described as a commuter suburb, and its own planning data says otherwise. The city is a net commuting destination, with 58 percent more people travelling in than out, drawing workers from Washington County, West Virginia and Pennsylvania. Where residents do commute out, the largest single destination is Montgomery County at 28 percent, down the I-270 corridor, rather than Washington DC at 3 percent.
